Science for the Lay Person: Dissecting Your Auto Insurance Policy

Many residents in New Jersey have heard people from out of state remark how we pay more for auto insurance than they do. There is an element of truth to that perception. Some people get “sticker shock” when they buy a new car, only to find out that now their insurance rates have increased substantially. Others often face much higher auto insurance premiums when a teenager in their household gets his or her driver’s license.

Sometimes people respond to the increase in rates by decreasing the amounts of their coverage in an attempt to lower their premium. This is not a wise decision.

Insurance, at its most basic definition, is designed to provide coverage or protection if something bad happens that is considered a “loss” under the insurance policy. Eliminating or lowering coverages on your auto policy may save you money in the short term, but it can end up costing you dearly in the future if a claim arises.

Understanding the many categories of coverage on a standard auto insurance policy can be daunting for even the most astute consumers.

In the past, I have conducted free seminars at local libraries where I have invited my readers and other members of the public to bring in their auto insurance policy paperwork along with any questions they have about it. I bring the cookies and doughnuts and you bring your policy paperwork. It’s a win-win!

I then can go over the coverages available and explain what they are and what amounts might make sense to include on an insurance policy. I know this can be a dry topic, but it is well worth it. And trust me when I say that it’s not nearly as painful (or boring) as it sounds! At the absolute worse, you will leave with a better understanding of your insurance options.

If you would rather email me your auto insurance policy, I also can review it for you by telephone or in-person with you at my office. I do this often as a free service to the public. Many people leave feeling much more at ease about the insurance coverage options that are available to them. So what are you waiting for? Send me an email at s-d@stark-stark.com and schedule your meeting with me. I am here to help.

Of course, if there is a different topic of personal injury law that interests you, send me an email about it. I would like to know what my readers feel is important I the legal landscape. If it is a topic that also be beneficial for others to learn about or maybe just something that others would find interesting, you might just see a future blog post about it.
