What is Monsanto Roundup, and Are There Monsanto Roundup Lawsuits?

Roundup is an herbicide that was developed by Monsanto several decades ago and is now the best-selling herbicide in the world. Roundup is used and regularly handled by workers such as farm laborers and landscapers. There is also the potential for Roundup concentrations in agricultural workplaces, food and drinking water. The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate. Recently, the Agency for Research on Cancer determined that there could be a link between extended exposure to glyphosate and cancer.

Plaintiffs in numerous pending Monsanto Roundup lawsuits have alleged that extensive exposure to Roundup, over several years, can cause non-Hodgkin lymphoma and forms of leukemia. Plaintiffs further allege that Monsanto knew of this link between Roundup and cancer, and the resulting danger to the public, for years, but failed to properly warn individuals that could be potentially exposed.

Accordingly, lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto in Missouri and California state courts. Additionally, Roundup claims have been consolidated into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which centralizes pretrial activities for multiple cases to save time, court costs, and attorney’s fees. These cases are pending before District Judge Vince Chhabria, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

Do I have a Roundup Lawsuit Settlement Claim?

Roundup is a weed killer that was developed by Monsanto. Roundup contains the herbicide glyphosate. Exposure to Roundup has been linked to non-Hodgkin lymphoma (also called non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or NHL) and certain forms of leukemia.

When Monsanto developed Roundup, Monsanto began to genetically modify certain crops, so that they would be resistant to glyphosate. This way, Roundup could be marketed to farmers as a weed killer that would not harm their crops. Monsanto also marketed Roundup for commercial and residential landscaping and gardening use. This quickly made Roundup the most popular weed killer on the market, and Roundup sales were likely a significant factor in Bayer recently acquiring Monsanto for over $60 billion.

However, thousands of nationwide Roundup lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto. Those Roundup lawsuits allege that Monsanto knew that studies throughout the years showed that Roundup exposure was linked to certain types of cancers. Those Roundup lawsuits further allege that, not only did Monsanto fail to warn about the link between Roundup exposure and cancer, but Monsanto purposefully downplayed and spread misinformation about the risk.

So far, several juries have rendered verdicts against Monsanto on these claims:

    • In August 2018, a jury awarded $289 million to DeWayne Johnson. Mr. Johnson had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma after several years of using Roundup on various campuses and ball fields, as a school groundskeeper.
    • In March 2019, a jury awarded $80 million to Edward Hardeman. Mr. Hardeman contracted non-Hodgkin lymphoma after several years of using Roundup on his farm.
    • In May 2019, a jury awarded $2.055 billion (yes billion) to Alberta and Alva Pilliod. The Pilliods had been diagnosed with a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma known as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), after several years of using Roundup on their numerous properties.

The plaintiffs in these successful cases so far share a few things in common: 1) they were exposed to a lot of Roundup (using it as farmers, landscapers or on large tracts of land); 2) they were exposed over several years; and 3) they were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
