According to Best Lawyers, Best Law Firms rankings are based on a rigorous evaluation process that includes the collection of client and professional reference evaluations, peer review from leading attorneys, industry leader interviews, plus a review of firm information provided through the formal research submission process. A firm is eligible for a ranking in a practice area and region when it has at least one lawyer recognized in the current edition of The Best Lawyers in America® in that practice area and jurisdiction.

The quantitative and qualitative data collected is combined into an overall Best Law Firms score for each firm, which is then compared to other firms within the same regional area. Because firms are often separated by small differences in overall score, Best Lawyers® uses a tier system rather than ranking law firms sequentially.

The 2027 rankings incorporate 30 million evaluations of more than 134,000 individual leading lawyers from more than 25,000 firms. For the 2027 edition, 15,671 firms received metropolitan rankings.
