Invokana Lawsuit

Invokana is Johnson & Johnson’s brand name for canagliflozin, a diabetes drug approved by the FDA in March 2013. Invokana is one of a category of medications used to treat type 2 diabetes and known as sodium-glucose costransporter-2, or SGLT2, inhibitors. Recently, there have been ongoing FDA warnings and reports of adverse effects of Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors.

Recent studies have linked these drugs to potentially dangerous side-effects, such as ketoacidosis, kidney damage and increased risk of bone fracture. Accordingly, a number of cases have been filed against drug makers alleging injuries suffered from taking Invokana. Those cases have been slated to be consolidated into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which centralizes pretrial activities for multiple cases to save time, court costs, and attorneyss fees.

In early 2017, results from two large clinical trials indicated that patients taking Invokana were roughly twice as likely to experience amputation injuries as patients on a placebo, causing the FDA to require a black box warning in July 2017:

What is Invokana, and are there Invokana Lawsuits?

Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors reduce the amount of glucose being absorbed in the kidneys so that it is passed out in the urine, thereby reducing the amount of glucose in your blood. Other SGLT2 inhibitors include Invokamet (canagliflozin/metformin), Farxiga (dapagliflozin), Jardiance (empagliflozin), Glyxambi (empagliflozin/linagliptin), and Xigduo XR (dapagliflozin/metformin). These drugs are sold by various drug makers, including AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly and Boehringer Ingleheim.

In May and December of 2015, the FDA warned that taking SGLT2 inhibitors for diabetes may result in excessive acid in the blood. Additionally, according to studies, including a 2016 study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA Internal Medicine), SGLT2 inhibitors have been found to potentially increase the risk of kidney damage in patients who took the drugs. Currently, lawsuits have been filed against the makers of Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitor manufacturers, claiming that the drugs cause acute interstitial nephritis, chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, and acute kidney injuries. These lawsuits have been sought to be consolidated in an MDL in the United States District Court, District of New Jersey. The allegations in the Invokana MDL include claims that the Invokana and other SGLT2 manufacturers knew of the defect in their products, and resulting danger to the public, but failed to properly warn patients or their doctors.
