  • What Is Injectafer and Does It Cause Hypophosphatemia?

Injectafer is the brand name of ferric carboxymaltose. Injectafer is an intravenous treatment for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in adult patients who cannot be successfully treated with iron pills, or suffer from non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease.

Injectafer was originally available in Europe (under the brand name Ferinject) and first marketed in the United States in 2013, where it is currently sold by pharmaceutical manufacturer Daiichi Sankyo. Unfortunately, Injectafer has been linked to a very serious condition known as hypophosphatemia (HPP).

Studies show that Injectafer is much more dangerous than other similar treatments (such as Monofer). These studies show a significant link between Injectafer and an increased risk of severe hypophosphatemia. Examples of these studies include:

What Are The Injectafer Hypophosphatemia Side-Effects?

Injectafer has been linked to an increased risk of hypophosphatemia. Hypophosphatemia is basically low serum phosphate levels (lack of vital phosphorous in the blood). Severe hypophosphatemia, especially over time, can have a dramatic effect on bones, muscles and the cardiovascular system. Injectafer hypophosphatemia has been linked to serious medical conditions, including:

    • osteomalacia (softening of the bones)
    • rhabdomyolysis (breakdown of damaged skeletal muscle)
    • cardiac arrest
    • cardiac arrhythmia
    • respiratory failure
    • and even death

Accordingly, in February 2020, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved revised labeling for Injectafer that includes additional warnings regarding hypophosphatemia.

If you believe you have taken Injectafer and suffered one of these Injectafer hypophosphatemia injuries, an experienced Injectafer hypophosphatemia attorney at Stark & Stark can help you assess your potential claims. Are You Impacted By The Pending Injectafer Hypophosphatemia Lawsuits? You May Be Entitled To Compensation.

Lawsuits against the manufacturers of Injectafer have been filed in federal court in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and state court in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas. These lawsuits claim that the manufacturers of Injectafer knew of its dangerous side-effects and link to hypophosphatemia, but failed to properly warn patients. Based upon these facts, it is expected that many more lawsuits across the nation will follow.

If you or a loved one have taken Injectafer and suffered a hypophosphatemia injury, it is strongly recommended that you seek counsel with an Injectafer hypophosphatemia attorney, who is knowledgeable in Injectafer hypophosphatemia lawsuits, claims, and injuries.
