Singulair is Merck’s brand name for the drug montelukast. Singulair is prescribed to treat asthma, as well as allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and other bronchial disorders. Since its approval in 1998, Singulair has been widely prescribed to millions of patients in the United States for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is available in tablets or granules and is usually used in conjunction with a corticosteroid inhaler.

Unfortunately, Singulair use has given rise to numerous studies and recent well-publicized lawsuits across the country, contending that Singulair can cause severe mental health side effects with long-term use. What Does the United States Food and Drug Administration say About Singulair?

The FDA has pointed to studies demonstrating severe mental health side effects, even after discontinued use of Singulair. These side effects may include:

• agitation, including aggressive behavior or hostility
• attention problems
• bad or vivid dreams
• depression
• disorientation or confusion
• feeling anxious
• hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not really there)
• irritability
• memory problems
• obsessive-compulsive symptoms
• restlessness
• sleepwalking
• stuttering
• tremor or shakiness
• trouble sleeping
• uncontrolled muscle movement

Most significantly, Prolonged use of Singulair has been found to lead to suicidal thoughts or actions.

Accordingly, in March 2020, the FDA required a Black Box Warning, the most prominent warning, to be added to the prescribing information of montelukast to describe these serious mental health side effects and to recommend that montelukast should only be reserved to treat allergic rhinitis in patients who are not treated effectively with or cannot tolerate other allergy medicines. The FDA also required a new patient Medication Guide to educate patients and parents/caregivers about the medicine.

This has spawned lawsuits across the country, contending that the makers of Singulair knew of the severe mental health side effects for years, but failed to properly warn patients. Many of those patients were children or young adults who were the unknowing victims of suicidal thoughts or actions.
