Zometa® Mass Tort (Bisphosphonate)
The bisphosphonate Zoledronic Acid is marketed under the brand name Zometa® by the drug manufacturer Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Zometa® received FDA approval in 2001. Studies show that Zometa® has been most commonly administered intravenously in the treatment of bone metastasis in cancer patients. It has been reported that certain Zometa® users have experienced varying degrees of osteonecrosis of the jaw (most commonly known as ONJ or BONJ).
Currently, claims involving Zometa® have received Mass Tort designation in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Middlesex County, and Multi-District Litigation designation in United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee.
